Ponte Vedra, Florida
June 4 - 6, 2010

2010a-perfect-shotAcademy Chairman Milner Irvin would like to welcome you to the Academy of Electrical Contracting website regarding the 2010 Annual Meeting in Ponte Vedra, Florida. Activities are scheduled for the first weekend in June. Onsite registration and the opening reception are set for Friday, June 4 and the formal dinner will conclude the events on Sunday, June 6. Most of the activities will be at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club, located about thirty minutes from the Jacksonville (JAX) airport.

As you can see below, we're planning a program that Academy Fellows and their guests won't want to miss.

We've designed this website to include all the information you should need to determine whether this meeting is for you. Once you've made up your mind to attend there are several things you need to do to register for the meeting, choose from some optional activities and reserve your hotel room. You'll find a checklist of these items at the bottom of the page.

Speaker: Joe Ehrmann

We have scheduled an excellent speaker who has turned his passion into his life's work. Joe Ehrmann did a lot of things during his twenties: he was a college All-American football player at Syracuse; a first round draft pick by the Baltimore Colts in 1973; he was an NFL star as a defensive tackle for 10 years; and was selected for the Pro Bowl. But that's not the Joe Ehrmann that will speak to the Academy on Sunday morning about "Building Men and Women for Others".

  • Get a sense of Joe's topic.
  • See why Parade Magazine said Joe Ehrmann was the "Most Important Coach in America".
  • View a 7 minute clip from HBO Real Sports about Joe Ehrmann.
  • At the meeting, you will receive a copy of a book that features Joe Ehrmann. Season of Life: A Football Star, a Boy, a Journey to Manhood, is a New York Times Bestseller by Jeffrey Marx that is a moving story about what it means to be a man of substance and impact. It will resonate with anyone struggling to make the right choices in life.

Opening Reception

2010clubhouseThe opening reception on Friday night will be at the nearbyTPC Sawgrass Clubhouse. This magnificent clubhouse is the home of the Players Championship golf tournament played there each May. This tournament offers the highest prize fund of any golf tournament on the PGA tour and is often referred to as the "fifth major". 2010players-stadium-17The "signature hole" at Sawgrass is arguably the single most recognizable par 3 in golf ~ the island green (17th hole). In addition to having the opportunity to greet your many friends, we're also arranging for tours of the facilities during the evening, including a brief visit to the island green conducted by very knowledgeable docents called Storytellers.

Working Group

The working group program will address Building Information Modeling (BIM). This discussion will be led by Fellow Greg Stewart. Our guest expert on BIM is Dr. Thomas Korman, PE, an Assistant Professor of Construction Management at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, CA. The use of BIM as a widely used tool in the construction industry is gaining momentum. As the use of Design-Build project delivery methods continues to increase, it is critical that electrical contractors become fluent with BIM technology and software. At this gathering you will have an opportunity to participate as well as learn:

  • how BIM can bring efficiency to the current practice of daily operations
  • the important criteria for choosing and implementing BIM solutions
  • how BIM can facilitate sustainable practices and
  • how BIM can provide opportunities for new services

Dr. Korman believes that electrical contractors not using BIM run the risk of getting left behind.

Formal Dinner

In addition to the traditional table photos taken at the formal dinner on Sunday night, we also plan to photograph each couple so that we can use these individual photos in our Academy Directory which we believe will enhance the usefulness of this publication. You will also have the option of sending a personal photo to be used in the directory instead.
